Ali Oli Bakery & Café

 

Talk to any Sai Kung local and most will be familiar with Hong Kong’s oldest European-style bakery, Ali Oli. This is the perfect spot to hang out and enjoy a cuppa whilst your little ones run around in the nearby playground. The all-day menu features breakfast classics like a Full English Breakfast and Bagel with Cream Cheese, pies, cakes and more. Don’t leave without getting a slice of their infamous Banoffee Pie as well, we’d even venture as far to say it’s the best in Hong Kong! Can’t make the trip to Sai Kung? Bakso

 A refreshing addition to Sai Kung’s dining scene, Bakso was named after an Indonesian meatball, a popular street food which is found all across Indonesia. This little eatery and the dishes they serve were inspired by the owner’s own memories of eating bakso in Bali after spending the day surfing in the sun. They decided to learn from Indonesian chefs and bring the taste of authentic Balinese cuisine back to Hong Kong. The signature Bakso noodles is a must-try – the beef balls are meaty and peppery whilst the broth is rich and well balanced. Other than that, you can’t go wrong with the Soto Ayam, chicken sate, or beef bone soup with rice.

Bones and Blades

Conveniently situated on the Sai Kung seafront, Bones & Blades dubs itself a butcher and delicatessen for conscious carnivores who want to bring home quality meat. From the moment you step inside, the glistening butcher’s counter filled with thick cuts of steaks, sausages, burger patties, pâtés and rillettes catches the eye. Unsurprisingly, the dine-in menu is mostly meat-based, featuring crowd favourites such as the pork belly bites and burgers, as well as meats directly from the butcher's counter prepared to your liking. On the off chance you’re not quite sure what to order, the Bones and Blades wait staff and house butcher are very knowledgeable and more than happy to provide some guidance on what to order according to your tastes!

Cena

If you’re looking for a place to chill out after a long day out and about, then look no further. With its large wooden tables and convenient location, Cena is a funky laidback spot to enjoy a pitcher of sangria between a group of friends. During the weekend, Cena is packed to the brim but come here on the weekday and bring your dog along to lounge for a few hours. This eatery is packed with a variety of American and Spanish-style dishes that cater to all tastes, but some of our favourite options include the Baja fish tacos and the baby back ribs served with fries.

Hushush Coffee Division

When you think of where to get the best coffee in Hong Kong, you probably think of Sheung Wan or Sai Ying Pun, but as it turns out, you can get some of the most delicious coffee around right here in Sai Kung. Hushush Coffee Division's founder, Kammie Hui, has over a decade’s experience as a barista and wanted to bring a high-quality specialty coffee experience to Sai Kung focusing on hand-brewed coffee and small batch seasonal ice cream. Hushush currently has two locations in Sai Kung, one of which exclusively sells ice cream, coffee and bagels, whilst the other offers a more extensive menu that includes savoury breakfast dishes. Whilst on the pricier side, we can’t help but swoon over their delightful selection of ice cream flavours like single malt whiskey, figs and honey and Thai roasted sticky rice.

Kachimushi

A strong contender in Sai Kung’s busy café scene. Every weekend without fail, you’ll find this quaint little café sporting a long queue of millennials and young families. From the outside, Kachimushi’s whitewash walls and big wooden doorway gives off major Japanese café vibes. Inside, the space is small, but its clean wooden decor and big windows manage to make it feel intimate and homey. They offer the usual selection of coffees you’d usually find in most cafés but also serve a delicious ice drip coffee, espresso tonic and adzuki bean latte. Food-wise, they specialise in open-faced toasts, salads and Dutch baby pancakes.

No Nationality

Opened in April this year, No Nationality is a relative newbie on the Sai Kung scene compared to some of the other eateries on this list but has already made a name for itself as the place to go for handcrafted pastas and specialty drinks. Must orders include the Orecchiette N’duja, the French toast with mixed berries and whipped cream, and of course, a cup of their locally sourced brews. The interior design is worth mentioning too. Operating across two floors, this Australian-style café boasts soft white walls, large windows and wooden fixtures to give the space a casual yet cosy and welcoming atmosphere.

One-thirtyone

 

Embark on a 30-minute journey out of Sai Kung town and arrive at what feels like the south of France. The three-storey Mediterranean style mansion is located right on the seafront and surrounded by beautiful gardens, so you can enjoy the picturesque views of Hong Kong’s countryside as you dine on sumptuous contemporary European cuisine. The set menu rotates every few months and consists of eight courses, all of which are made from locally sourced produce and combined in novel ways to create a kaleidoscope of carefully crafted, pretty artisanal dishes. The current menu includes foie gras parfait covered in dark chocolate and served on brioche toast, seared scallop on a bell pepper sauce, confit salmon with clam broth and Australian lamb rack.

Padstow

 

Some meals are meant to be drawn out and enjoyed, and what better place to do so than on Padstow’s alfresco balcony overlooking the waterfront. The nautical concept and colourful blue and white colour theme whisks you away to the Cornish seaside, the atmosphere reminiscent of a beach club while the cuisine is quintessentially English pub food. Think fish and chips, scotch eggs, sticky toffee puddings… It’s the kind of place you should ideally forget about counting calories as you indulge in some of the most authentic British food Hong Kong has to offer.

The Conservatory

Treat yourself to a Mediterranean-inspired feast at The Conservatory, a well-known alfresco dining spot in the Sai Kung town square. With its banana leaf patterned wall panelling and expansive window front, this small yet bright and airy eatery has an interior reminiscent of (you guessed it) a conservatory. The menu is packed with crowd pleasers and tons of healthy options, but some of our personal favourites include the seared tuna loin, crispy cider roasted pork belly and Moroccan lentil salad, all intended for sharing.

From the times when waiters used to look genuinely puzzled at the request for “no meat,” to entire streets and communities centred around plant-based living, Hong Kong has come a long way and now has no shortage of vegetarian and vegan restaurants. Nestled in the bustling Square in Sai Kung, Casa-rebranded 2084 (pronounced, “twenty eighty-four”) is one such restaurant, serving up an eclectic mix of plant-based Asian tapas. 2084 has something for every taste, mood and person and certainly makes the trek to Sai Kung worth it. – Aakriti Batra, Contributor
